The proposed law, which has undergone significant revisions, would compel tech giants to enter into deals with at least eight Australian media outlets to fully offset their obligations. The legislation also includes provisions for smaller media companies, offering a 200% offset for deals with regional, CALD, LGBTQI, and other smaller players. The government's decision comes as the country grapples with the challenges of a rapidly changing media landscape, with many outlets struggling to stay afloat amidst rising costs and declining advertising revenue.

So it still will be open to tech companies to only partially offset their obligation. But if they want to fully offset their obligation, there have to be at least eight deals. In addition to that obligation, there’s a 200% offset for small and medium players.
