A surge in AI-driven datacenters could send global e-waste soaring, with discarded electronics expected to triple over the next quarter-century, according to a new report. The volume of toxic waste generated by AI infrastructure alone could accumulate enough to wrap around the Earth six times in shipping containers, yet no systematic solutions exist for its disposal. Much of the waste contains hazardous materials like lead, mercury, and persistent chemicals, alongside recoverable metals that remain difficult to extract. Without intervention, the environmental and resource challenges posed by this electronic waste crisis may deepen significantly.
