Democratic lawmakers in Buffalo blasted the Department of Homeland Security on Friday, accusing it of “obstructing the pursuit of justice” in the death of Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a nearly blind Rohingya refugee who froze to death after border agents abandoned him outside a closed coffee shop on a bitter night. At a press conference near the spot where Shah’s body was discovered, New York’s Tim Kennedy was joined by House Homeland Security Committee ranking Democrat Bennie Thompson, California’s Lou Correa and New Jersey’s Nellie Pou, all demanding that DHS release all relevant records and fully cooperate with the Erie County district attorney’s probe. The lawmakers warned that any delay or cover‑up would erode public trust in immigration enforcement and called for a transparent investigation into the agency’s handling of the case. The incident has sparked a broader debate over the treatment of vulnerable migrants at U.S. borders and heightened scrutiny of DHS policies.
