Tensions in Northern Ireland escalated overnight as police were forced to intervene in a violent anti-immigration protest that saw a crowd of around 300 people clash with authorities. The demonstrators, who reportedly had their sights set on a hotel hosting migrants, set fire to a truck and hurled bricks and petrol bombs near the Sandyknowes roundabout in Newtownabbey, just outside Belfast. As the situation spiralled out of control, police deployed a water cannon to disperse the crowd, bringing an end to the second night of violent protests in the region. The unrest has raised concerns about the growing divide between communities in Northern Ireland, where anti-immigration sentiment has been simmering for months.
